LEAD SERVICE OVERVIEW
Under the state mandate, the Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act (Act), municipalities are required by law to develop an inventory to identify the number of suspected lead service lines in addition to creating and implementing a comprehensive plan to replace those service lines within a required timeframe.
In accordance with the law, the City of Evanston (City) submitted a draft Lead Service Line Replacement Plan (Plan) in April 2025, and the final Plan will be submitted in 2027. Upon approval of the Plan by the Illinois EPA, the City anticipates it will then replace 3% to 5% of its water service lines each year.
LEAD IN DRINKING WATER
The City of Evanston remains dedicated to reducing our community’s exposure to lead in drinking water by funding programs to replace water service lines and developing resources to keep residents informed on what they can do to mitigate health risks associated with lead.
Homes built before 1986 are more likely to have plumbing materials that can contaminate drinking water with lead, putting residents at risk for severely impaired mental function and organ damage. It is important for residents to understand the dangers of lead and steps you can take to keep your family safe and healthy.
